Post Modern Era Blog

The Post Modern era was from 1980 to present Postmodern art rejected and questioned the styles and techniques used in modern art, altogether redefining what art can be. Three of the artist from the 1980 that I am going to blog about are Keith Haring, Eric Fischi and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Post Modern Artist Keith Haring

The Last Rainforest by Keith Haring. New York 1989

This painting that Keith painted was his last great masterpieces. This painting is more detailed, more complex than some of his other paintings. In this painting yo see very detailed line and also colors. There are many motifs in this work that we recognize. On the upper right hand side one can make out Haring’s oft-repeated Pyramid form and not far away is his similarly relied upon lightbulb. There are multiple televisions littered around the all-consuming landscape,

Untitled, 1986, Oil and Acrylic on Canvas by Keith haring

In this painting by Keith  you will see that he uses very different shapes and only a few colors. Keith was as great graffiti artist. I like how he used yellow in two corners and green dots in the top right hand corner to showcase his imagination. Keith Haring, like other artists of those years, saw formalism as a refusal of diversity, and the simultaneous presence of different languages as a cultural and moral asset.

Master Bedroom, 1983 - Eric Fischl

Master Bedroom by Eric Fischi in 1983

In this painting you can see Eric artistic ability with the detail of the dog and the person. He uses blue and white for the bed sheet. and Black, gray and white for the walls. This painting is describing the contemporary realism. There is also great detail in the bed that he painted. Eric Fischi was also known as an artist that like to paint people naked to also showcase is artistic ability.

So She Moved into the Light - Eric Fischl

So She Moved into the Light. 1997 Eric Fischi.

In this painting he is taking making sure the woman in the center is getting all the attention. If you look in the background you see all the men looking at her. The park is a great setting for this painting. You see the dog stand in the back and also you see many different types of men.

Riding with death. 1988 Jean-Michel Basquiat.

In this painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat it depicts a black man riding on the skeleton of a horse. The man's body appears to be decomposing with flesh still visible while his arms are reduced to skeletal form. He makes understand that death is always with us. The detail of skeleton shows Jean true artistic ability.

God, Law. by Jean-Michel Basquiat 1981

in this painting it shows us that god and law are equal. It is a basic painting that shows different layers of color and lines. I like how god is on one side and law is on the other because we know that god affects some of the laws in this country.

  1. Your blog is super cool and I love the artwork you chose. The post-modern era is awesome, and you really showcased how different the art during this time was, especially the work by Keith Haring. I also did my blog on this time and it’s very interesting because we had very different artwork which just goes to show how unique all the artwork is.

  2. While I agree that the equal visual portrayal of "GOD" and "LAW" is significant in Basquiat's piece, I believe that the far more significant element of the artwork is the dollar sign. The signs for God and Law are placed coequally beneath a dollar sign. The dollar sign is also closest to the scales, a symbol for the justice system. I believe this shows that Basquiat is saying that money controls the justice system and that the corrupted justice is placed above both God and the Law of man.
