Classical Blog

During the 1700's there was some famous portraits of American war hero's. This time started the Classical Era. During the 1700's America was going through new transition. This showed the British that America militia was here to stay. The Constitution was written 1787 and ratified in 1788. In the three paintings below I am going to show some of my favorite artists during this time that showed us truly what happened in history.

This is the Painting Called "Mrs. Daniel Denison Rogers" in Boston MA in 1784.

This painting shows us the use of pastel colors in the sky and in her shimmering of her dress. John Singleton Copley was a famous American born artist that was known for his portraits. He incorporated the Rococo style. Rococo style is an exuberant decoration, with an abundance of curves, counter-curves. The details in the lace of her hat, her facial features and the use of flesh tones are all traits that Copley was known for and they are truly incredible.

This is a famous painting of George Washington is called the Lansdowne Portrait.  Drawn by Gilbert Stuart in 1797 in Washington DC.

This painting of George Washington is showing us a a painting on an oil canvas. George Washington is dressed in a black velvet suit with his hand stretched out. Gilbert Stuart dream was to paint George Washington. He wanted to also paint George Washington in different image and quality. George is not holding a battle sword, he is holding a decorative sword which in Gilbert mind is showing democratic form of government. George Washington was one of our founding fathers and also the very first president. In the painting he is surround by many aspects of symbolism.

This one was painted by John Trumball in 1775 near Bunker Hill while looking through field glasses.

This painting is from the famous scene from the Death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker Hill. This painted depicts the actual scene that John saw. John is using his classical style that he learned in Great Britain. Trumbull was greatly influenced by the onset of American independence and this can be seen in how he glorifies American subject matter as a History Painter.  In this painting the focus is on Warren’s body in white and British Major John Small and there are several soldiers from both sides of the battle holding onto several flags. John is also showing us that the American militia was here to stay.

  1. I enjoy looking at the 1st painting, Mrs. Daniel Denison Rogers. The details in the painting are wonderful. Her dress has so much detail. Her hat is exquisite! I love the background. The George Washington painting, made me think of the nickel. I am wondering what is the backstory of him holding out his hand. Overall great picks.

  2. It is interesting to see in Trumball's piece that even before the nation has existed very long, some have developed a strong sense of patriotism. Even while the nation was in its infancy, some, like Trumball, already sought to glorify the nation and its actions.

  3. The background on Mrs Daniel Denison Rogers is my favorite part about the painting because of the intensity of the orange sunset next to the shades of greys and blues fading subtly into the darkness. The way she is position makes me think she is turning back to tell me something or to make sure I am still by her side.
